Background:
Transformers One takes place during the age before the Great War began on Cybertron. The story centers around best friends Orion Pax and D-16 going on an adventure that will change their lives forever. One of the primary antagonists in the film is Airachnid, who served as the enforcer for Sentinel Prime. You can see her in action in the clip below:
If the name "Airachnid" rings a bell, that's because the character's origins are not with Transformers One but rather with the Transformers Prime series where a different version of the character appeared. Prior to the release of this figure, the only other version of this character released was the "Cog Changer" Airachnid but this is the first to use her animation model as its foundation.

Packaging:
Studio Series packaging has changed since the line first began. The boxes are still rectangular with black as the primary background color. In the front there is a large window cut away to show the figure from the head down to the legs. Hasbro can do this thanks in part to the return to plastic windows. On the right is artwork of the character in both modes. To the left is a pill shaped box that indicates a 36 step transformation and an age recommendation of 8+. Towards the bottom is the "Transformers" logo now set horizontally with the "Studio Series" logo beneath it. Below that is the Transformers One logo and the character's name next to that.
The back of the box has a background that goes from red to black. The top features a screenshot of the character with the movie logo next to it, her name and the description "AIRACHNID is the Surveillance Officer for SENTINEL PRIME" in five languages. Under that are photos of the figure in both modes calling out the 36 step transformation. Under that is a ton of legal information in various languages.
Accessories:
In the Transformers One film Airachnid does not carry any weapons but she did have blasters attached to her forearms. Each blaster features an angled section on the back and a cylindrical barrel in front. The angles on top are distinctive and match what was seen in the film. The weapons each have a 5mm peg on the bottom and the ends of the barrels can fit Blast Effects. Each blaster is made out of gunmetal grey plastic with the barrel painted silver.

Robot Mode:
Contrary to what her name suggests, Airachnid does not transform into a spider. Instead, her robot form is spider-like, much like her Transformers Prime predecessor. The character is not techno-organic, so all her details are very angled and look like layers of armor over a skeleton underneath. She has very unique design features which include:
- The head design looks like a regular design from the front, but look at it from the top or sides and you'll find it stretches back, extending over her back slightly. The edges of the "helmet" section have additional optic sensors sculpted into them and it wraps nicely around the top of the head.
- The arms each have distinctive, angled armor pieces on the upper and lower arms. These match up with the style of the armor on her torso and thighs.
- The legs have a unique shape, with the circles for her vehicle mode hover fans around the knee area. Her feet are thin but resemble a pair of high heel shoes.
- Attached to her back are four additional spider-like legs. The two on top are curved (as they become one of the hover fans in vehicle mode) with points at the end. The other two are more angled with distinctive bug-like "feet" at the end.
Overall this sculpt is fantastic and looks like it came right out of the movie. There's a bit of extra bits on he back and legs, but they're necessary for the figure's transformation and they're not in the way so I have no issue with them.

This figure is made of two shades of metallic grey plastic: a lighter one and a darker one. The lighter color makes up most of the figure with the darker one making up smaller parts like connection points on the back. Paint colors include red, silver, lavender and gunmetal grey. Airachnid was not exactly the most colorful character in the film, so the deco matches with the look of the character in the film very well. Key details like the angled red lines on her arms and the lavender on her (many) eyes are all present and look great.
There are twenty seven points of articulation on this figure. Some are very basic like ball joints on the shoulders and elbows but she gets a ton more articulation points thanks to the extra legs on her back. If you want to have some fun, you can use the extra legs to achieve more "spider-like" poses or to use as weapons (as she does in the film). There are four attachment points for the blasters in this mode. You can connect them to her forearms or she can hold them in her hands.
Transformation to Vehicle Mode:
- Detach the blasters (if attached) and set them aside for now.
- Straighten out the arms and legs.
- Move the four legs on the back forward a bit to move them out of the way.
- Swing the bar on the back up, then rotate the smaller rotor piece around.
- Swing out the fan blades on the small rotor piece.
- Swing the back panel out then up.
- Collapse the two lower legs on the back, folding the lower segments into the ones above them and then the top one.
- Swing the lower legs in so they are angling upward and connect them together.
- Rotate the base of the upper legs on the back, then connect the two tabs at the base to the slots at the base of the back panel.
- Connect the ends of the upper legs to form the outer ring of the large hover fan.
- Swing each forearm armor piece out.
- Rotate the fists around to reveal the blasters, then swing the armor back into place.
- Swing the arms back at the shoulders.
- Swing the front torso panel forward.
- Push the robot head down.
- Swing the back piece with the large hover fan on it up. There is a tab towards the front that connects to the back of the robot head.
- Swing the arms all the way back. The tabs on the shoulder joints fit into the open slot on the "V" shaped piece on the back.
- Swing the arms up and then connect the forearms. This is also a good time to reattach the blasters to the forearms.
- Swing the lower legs up against the knees.
- Extend the legs out.
- Move the thigh armor aside.
- Rotate the lower legs so the blasters on the hover fan sections point inward.
- Rotate the legs at the hips so the thigh armor pieces point forward.
- Push the legs against the sides of the vehicle.
- Point the thigh armor pieces forward.
- Swing the arms down and attach them to the thigh armor pieces.

Vehicle Mode:
Airachnid is an attack hovercraft in vehicle mode. She has one large hover fan in the back and two smaller ones on the sides. The center has a cockpit-like section and two sections stick out in front that remind me of parts of The Bat from the Christopher Nolan Batman movies. Where the design differs from the on-screen model are the two smaller hover fans. On either side the feet and heel pieces stick out to the side and the front has a weapon barrel. It would have been cool if they had been able to fold inside the legs but I think that would have exceeded the budget for this figure. Still, I don't mind because they look kind of like wings on the sides.
The fan blades inside the large hover fan in the back can be spun manually. If you want to attach some Blast Effects, the ones in front of the small hover fans and the blasters under the front of the vehicle let you attach them with no problem.
This mode mostly uses the lighter metallic grey plastic color with the hover fans on the sides painted gunmetal grey. That doesn't sound like a lot but in the film she was pretty much just grey in this mode.
Final Thoughts:
My biggest reservation about this figure is the scale. Standing at 4.5 inches (11.43 cm) tall this figure is really tiny for a character that towered over Orion and D-16 in the film. I understand all the Transformers One Studio Series figures have been Deluxe scale so this is just following that, but it is a shame. I wish it had been a Voyager. That said, this is a solid Deluxe Class figure with an extraordinary transformation and a fantastic sculpt. Recommended, but keep in mind she's not "to scale".
Pros:
- Excellent movie accurate sculpt.
- At this scale it is great to see the "extra legs" worked into the design.
- Beautiful colors.
- Excellent articulation.
Cons:
- The size of the figure is my biggest issue with it.
