Background:
In 1997, the Beast Wars episode "Coming of the Fuzors Part 1" aired. This introduced a new type of Transformers character: the Fuzor! Fuzors were characters whose beast modes represented a fusion of two creatures (hence the name). In Legacy United we got a new version of the Maximal Fuzor Silverbolt. Now in Age of the Primes we have the Predacon Fuzor, Quickstrike! Quickstrike's beast mode was unique, featuring a combination of a cobra and a scorpion. His personality was that of an overly aggressive cowboy and fans really enjoyed his appearances on the show. Believe it or not, there has not been another transformable action figure of Quickstrike since the original, so this release is very special for fans of the character.

Packaging:
Age of the Primes represents a dramatic shift in Generations packaging. Unlike previous years of the War for Cybertron trilogy or Legacy which went in dramatic directions with packaging shape and artwork, the designers have dialed back the look of the boxes a lot. The Age of the Primes packaging winds up looking a lot more like Studio Series packaging. The boxes are now rectangular. No weird angles or anything. The background is just plain black. The "Transformers" logo is no longer vertical (dropping a trend that began over ten years ago) and is now horizontal in the front of the packaging with the "Age of the Primes" name underneath it. Character art is featured to the right, but it's only partial art showing a bit of the character in robot mode with focus on the beast mode underneath. To the left are icons describing how many steps the character takes to convert from one mode to the other (21 in this case) and the age recommendation (8+ in this case).
Quickstrike is inside the box attached to a cardboard tray. You can see the entire figure in robot mode thanks to the return of plastic windows! Fans will recall that for the last few years Transformers toys have had no plastic windows in an effort to (ostensibly) make more eco-friendly packaging. However, this led to damaged toys with heads being yanked off and sometimes figures being outright stolen. For many fans, the return of the plastic windows is a welcome one.
The back of the box shows the character in both modes calling out the 21 step transformation. Behind the character is a sky background with a wheel showing some of the Thirteen Prime symbols. I think the designers were going for a more "adult" and "premium" appearance to the packaging and to that end it works. It looks like something you'd see in a museum shop, but I do feel some of the fun and whimsy of the dramatic Legacy artwork and visual bombast has been lost and I'm a tad sad about that.

Robot Mode:
For those curious, this figure is a true Deluxe Class, meaning it is not the same size as the original Quickstrike. The Beast Wars Quickstrike was a "Basic Class" figure sold at a $5 price point back in 1997. There really is no exact equivalent to that scale today but if you think back to the Legends Class of about ten years ago (Brawn being one example) it was roughly like that in terms of size and complexity. This new Quickstrike however measures about 5.5 inches (about 13.97 cm) tall and dwarfs his predecessor when you put them side by side.
The original Quickstrike figure was pretty accurate to the television show. This time out the designers decided to take things one step further and base this figure on the TV show's CG model, making it as show accurate as they could. This starts with his very unique shape. Perhaps the most distinct parts of his shape are his arms and legs. The arms are asymmetrical, with the right arm comprised of a cobra snake head and "body" while the left arm has his beast mode legs at the end, making it look like he has eight large fingers. The legs feature sharp looking details like his knee armor that sticks out at an angle and the scorpion claws from the beast mode form his feet, which have a claw like shape and serrated edges to give him an extra dangerous appearance.
Getting down to the details, there is a ton of organic detailing on this figure. His cobra arm has sculpted scales running from the head of the cobra all the way to the shoulder. The beast mode legs/left hand have mottled details on them that look like the "organic" textures used in the show. His head sculpt looks just like the one on the show complete with narrow, mean looking eyes and a mouth that looks kind of like a rebreather from a scuba mask. His torso features several curved designs with a raised circle in the middle. Overall, this sculpt is absolutely beautiful and true to the character. I am super impressed by it.
In addition to the sculpt, the designers also made sure the colors were true to the character. Quickstrike is made up of brown, yellow, orange and green plastic. The layout of these colors matches the television show very well. Paint details are done in metallic green, yellow, red and purple. All these colors appeared on the character in the show. Among the best details are those painted in with the metallic green paint. I especially like the details on the top of the cobra head. I also appreciate the tiny purple Predacon symbol on the small sphere that sits in the middle of his chest. Overall, the colors on this figure all give it a "metallic" feel that reflects his animated appearance. Yes, there are some tiny details that would have been "nice to have" (like painting the ends of the long "fingers" on his left hand) but overall they did an amazing job.
There are a whopping thirty one points of articulation on this figure. This is thanks in part to his right arm alone having nine points of articulation. This is a carry over design idea from the original Quickstrike figure whose right arm was made into segments, each with a ball joint so the "cobra arm" could be posed like a snake. This modern version does the same thing and the mouth of the cobra head can open and close. In addition to his exceptional articulation, this figure has four 5mm ports. One is under the cobra head. Two are found under the feet and the base of his left "hand" has one as well. Inside the cobra's mouth is a small peg to fit a Blast Effect. All the joints on my copy of this figure are nice and tight, allowing for a good variety of poses.
Transformation to Beast Mode:
- Swing up the shoulder armor.
- Swing the center of the chest down.
- Swing the chest panel up.
- Swing the right arm out and forward, tucking the base into the groove at the bottom of the chest panel.
- Swing the chest panel back into place.
- Swing the chest panel all the way up so the back piece connects to it.
- Swing the shoulder armor pieces up and push them into the sides.
- Swing the left arm under the beast mode and swing out the "fingers" to form the beast mode legs.
- Swing each leg out a bit and swing the two halves of the feet together to form the claws.
- Swing the robot head down.

Beast Mode:
Quickstrike's beast mode is one of the most unique beast modes in Transformers history. Most of the beast mode is a scorpion from the head to the claws to his main body and legs. The tail is basically a cobra replacing the scorpion tail. Instead of a stinger, he has a cobra head which (presumably) was meant to fire poisons or energy beams (I'm using my imagination here). His main body and claws are very ornate, with a beautiful pattern with star shapes, curves and points that give a figure a wonderfully rich appearance.
All the colors from the robot mode carry here, but the way the various body parts come together the yellow and metallic green colors make up a bulk of the deco with red on his eyes. The tail is of course brown with green and red paint. The legs are orange plastic. These are not normally colors I'd put together, but they work really well and the shades used look like the TV show model. Again, this figure looks beautiful!
There are twenty points of articulation in this mode. Seven points alone are in the tail thanks to all the ball joints and the cobra head's jaw. The rest are mostly focused on the claw arms. Unlike the original version of this character, his beast mode head is also articulated and able to turn side to side! Overall this is some fantastic articulation for a beast mode. Since parts of his claws are formed from the feet, he has 5mm ports in each claw that you can use to attach accessories.
Final Thoughts:
Quickstrike is absolutely awesome. He looks amazing in both modes, he has crazy good articulation and the deco is outstanding. I love this figure and he's highly recommended!
Pros:
- Beautiful sculpt that represents the TV show model brilliantly.
- Gorgeous deco.
- Excellent articulation.
- Intuitive and unique transformation.
Cons:
- No notes on this one.
