Background:
Transformers One was an animated theatrical film released on September 20, 2024. The film features a core group of characters having an adventure before the beginning of the Great War during Cybertron's Golden Age. In the trailer we learn that our heroes could not transform until Alpha Trion gifted them transformation cogs. You can see Alpha Trion in action in the video embedded below.
Previously Hasbro released a version of Alpha Trion as a Prime Changer, but this figure is the first time this iteration of the character is appearing in the more movie accurate Studio Series line. This is a completely new figure and not a retool or redeco of any pre-existing figure.

Packaging:
Alpha Trion is packaged in a standard rectangular Studio Series box. The box design has been changed from previous years. The background is still black and the Transformers logo is in big red letters, but it is now horizontal along the bottom half of the box front instead of being set vertically on the right. Under that is the blue "Studio Series" name. Underneath the "Studio Series" logo is the logo for "Transformers One" with Alpha Trion's name next to it. To the right is his artwork showing his upper body in robot mode and beast mode under that. The middle is an open window showing off the full action figure thanks to the return of plastic windows! To the left is a pill shaped border with symbols in it calling out a 26 step transformation and age recommendation of 8+.
The back of the box features Alpha Trion in both modes, calling out his 26 step transformation. The top features a screenshot from the film (when the future-Autobots find Alpha Trion in the cave). To the right is the blurb "ALPHA TRION, the wisest and most noble of the Primes, is awoken by ORION PAX." in multiple languages. Like all the Studio Series figures from the past year or so this one does not include a backdrop. This feature was removed no doubt partly to save money.
Accessories:
Before diving into the accessories, be warned. Four of these accessories are tiny spikes. They can easily roll away on your desk or fall onto the floor and get lost. When you are opening up this figure I highly recommend opening up the accessory bag over some type of container in case any of the spikes fall. Okay, let's get into it:
- Tail/Club Weapon: The tail from Alpha Trion's beast mode also serves as his hand held melee weapon. The weapon is made of rubbery, translucent purple plastic (evoking the look of Energon from the original series). The five spikes included with the figure can attach to the end, making it a spiked mace weapon! The handle has a 5mm peg, allowing Trion to hold it in either hand.
- Spikes (Small): Alpha Trion's classic G1 design featured some spikes on his shoulders. In a nod to that design, the Transformers One designers gave him spikes on his shoulders and the sides of his knees. These spikes are all made of the same translucent purple as the tail. These pieces can all be attached to the end of the tail/mace weapon.
- Horn: Alpha Trion's beast mode has a horn on its head. That horn can be detached and connected to the mace weapon. The horn is made of the same translucent purple plastic as the tail and the four small spikes.

Robot Mode:
Alpha Trion's sculpt is meant to represent his damaged state when he is found by the (future) Autobots. The core design elements from the CG model are mostly present. This includes the distinct curved shapes of his torso armor, the round shape of his shoulder armor and the feet which feature two segments that look like giant "toes". In a really nice touch, the two shoulder armor pieces are not the same. The right shoulder armor looks "complete" while the left side one looks damaged and like pieces are missing. His head sculpt borrows from G1 Alpha trion, featuring triangular shapes with horns sticking up. Like the CG model in the film, one horn is broken. Among the more distinct details on the figure are patches of vegetation on his back and shoulders, a sign of his great age when he is found in a cave on Cybertron.
The only detail that is missing is his cape. In G1, Alpha Trion had two panels on his back that looked like a cape. In the Transformers One film, Trion has a cape that was tattered and moved more like fabric. Sadly, this figure does not have a cape - at all. It is not sculpted on as detailing nor is it an accessory. This is a real shame as it was a distinct part of the character's appearance in the film.
Alpha Trion is made up of purple, gunmetal grey and soft translucent purple plastic. The gunmetal grey makes up a lot of the robot mode including the shoulders (under the shoulder armor), the inside of the chest, the fists, the thighs and feet. Purple plastic is largely used for armor pieces such as the forearms, shoulder armor and lower legs. The purple is rather light and looks like a dark shade of pink. Paint colors include silver, blue, purple and green. The silver is used extensively for details on his back, the face and feet. Blue is used for the robot eyes. Purple paint is used on parts like the lower leg armor. Overall the deco looks good. I do wish there was some more "wear and tear" in the deco. Perhaps some dark grey or black spray ops would have been great, especially on his chest. The shoulder and back panels look great, but his head, chest and legs just look too "clean" to have been battle damaged and lying in a cave for eons.

There are twenty eight points of articulation on this figure. That includes five in each arm and six in each leg. I'm being generous by counting how you can move his feet and heels for different poses. Interestingly, due to the way the ankles are designed there is no ankle tilt, a rarity nowadays. In this mode you can attach his horn and spikes to the tail weapon or you can leave the small spikes attached to his shoulder armor and legs. In the film, Trion is actually missing these spikes in robot mode so having them disconnected is more "screen accurate".
Transformation to Beast Mode:
- Detach the accessories and set them aside for now.
- Straighten out the arms and legs.
- Attach the small spikes to the shoulders and sides of the knees.
- Swing the purple armor on each forearm out.
- Rotate the fists around to switch them out for the claws.
- Swing the forearm armor pieces back down.
- Pull on the round back piece and swing it out, revealing the beast mode head.
- Swing the beast mode head up.
- Swing the robot chest panel forward.
- Rotate the piece that the beast mode and robot mode heads are attached to.
- Rotate the beast mode head around.
- Swing the back piece forward and push it into place.
- Swing the robot arms forward and connect the upper arms to the small pegs on the sides (under the shoulder area).
- Rotate the robot forearms so the claws point forward.
- On each leg swing the purple armor up over the thighs.
- Swing the heel pieces in against the ankles.
- Swing the robot foot pieces up.
- Bend the legs so Trion can stand on all four beast mode legs.
- Attach the tail to the back.
- Attach the horn to the top of the beast mode head.

Beast Mode:
Alpha Trion's beast mode is a horned lion (which in my head canon is really some type of Cybertronian wildlife). Like so many Transformers that transform into four legged animals, a lot of the robot mode appears in this mode including the arms and legs. However, this mode has some beautiful visual elements. For instance, his back armor takes center stage here visually. Not only does it have "vegetation" sculpted onto it, but the right side of it is broken off, driving home that he is battle damaged. His tail is designed to look like it has energy rippling through it and the head has some fierce looking jaws and the horn looks like it could do some serious damage. In a nice touch, the beast mode head has the same crest and "horns" as the robot head, with the right side horn missing a piece! I really like this beast mode but I do wish there was a bit more paint on parts like the rear legs and head to give the figure a "grittier" look.
All the colors from the robot mode carry over to this mode, but now the back panel really shows of its silver, green and metallic purple colors. the translucent plastic on the spikes, horn and tail also shine here, looking like parts formed from energy (like in the film). The eyes are painted blue and there is purple painted on top of the head. This mode does draw the eye to some more vegetation details on the sides of his legs but they are unpainted so they kind of fade into the background. I wish they had been painted green as well.
There are nineteen points of articulation in this mode, which is pretty great for a beast mode. If you want to add a couple points, disconnect the arms from the pegs on the sides of the torso and you can use the shoulder articulation, adding four more points. His head is also able to move up and down and side to side. The jaw can also open and close. I am also counting the ability of the tail to move up and down at the base.
Final Thoughts:
Alpha Trion is a good representation of the character but there are some elements missing here and there that keep this figure from being a home run. The sculpt is great with cool detailing, asymmetrical parts and "broken" pieces like the back armor. He also has some really nice colors, especially the green on the back and shoulders. However, I would have liked to see him have some type of cape accessory and more battle damage paint ops. If you are a fan of Transformers One, then this figure definitely belongs in your collection. For the more general Transformers buyer you may want to get Age of the Primes Alpha Trion instead. Recommended for a very specific audience.
Pros:
- Excellent sculpt including "vegetation" growing on the character as seen in the film.
- Good deco (but not spectacular).
- Excellent articulation.
- Unique and fun beast mode for this character.
Cons:
- Could have used more deco to look more battle damaged and worn.
- Spikes are way too small and easy to lose.
- Missing ankle tilts.
- No cape accessory.
