Background
Airachnid was first introduced in the Transformers Prime series as a Decepticon who could transform into a helicopter. She was seemingly partly inspired by Beast Wars Blackarachnia but is very much her own character. More recently a different version of the character appeared in the Transformers One theatrical film. This version of the character is a new one that has yet to appear in the cartoon as of this review.

Packaging
Airachnid is packaged in an open box, similar in style to what past toy lines like Cyberverse have used. The box is mostly white with red and white text. The figure is in robot mode and attached to the cardboard by rubber ties. The section in front of the figure features a horizontal "Transformers" logo (a big change from the past decade or so) along with the "Cyberworld" logo. To the right is artwork of Airachnid in both modes. To the left are a series of symbols showing Airachnid having 4 transformation steps and the "6+" age recommendation under it. It also calls out his "Armor Up" ability, which is really just him wielding a transforming weapon. The back features Airachnid in both modes with a symbol showing a rocky landscape. It calls out her 4 step transformation. To the right is a call out for her weapon's transformation. Below that is a cross sell for Optimus Prime, Bumblebee and Galvatron. Below that is a ton of legal information in multiple languages.
Accessories
Airachnid includes two main accessories. One is his primary "Armor Up" weapon and another simpler piece.
- Pincer Hammer: The "Pincer Hammer" is a redeco of the weapon that was included with Cyberworld Chop Shop. It features a handle leading up to a huge sledgehammer like top section. On one side of the head are two giant pincer claws. If you pull the handle down, the pincers swing out and a blade extends out from the top of the hammer. The weapon has three 5mm pegs, one at the bottom, one set at a right angle from the first and another on the actual hammer head itself. These allow you to attach the weapon to Chop Shop in a variety of ways. He can hold this as a melee weapon or if you use a different peg it almost looks like some type of giant blaster weapon. This weapon is made up of purple, light grey and dark grey plastic.
- Pedipalps/Gatling Gun:
The other accessory is a piece featuring two Pedipalps and a gatling gun barrel in the middle. This piece features a peg in the back, allowing you to attach it to Airachnid. This piece is made of light grey plastic with no paint applications.
Technically the beast mode legs attached to his robot legs can detach and feature 5mm pegs. I don't consider them accessories but I can see them being used as hand held weapons of some sort.

Robot Mode
When I first picked up Airachnid I thought she was a retool and redeco of Cyberworld Chop Shop. However, upon closer examination the two do not appear to share any parts. That said, they do share engineering both in terms of their transformation scheme and articulation. For instance, both Chop Shop and Airachnid only have arm articulation at the shoulders while the legs can bend at the hips and knees.
Airachnid's design calls back to previous incarnations of the character. Her head sculpt has a helmet section with angled designs that resemble her Transformers Prime predecessor. The legs are thin and the lower legs look almost like a pair of long boots. The chest features a set of arachnid eyes on it (which reminds me of Tarantulas' waist design). Overall I really like this design even if it is rather simplified compared to say, a Deluxe Class figure.
Airachnid is made of dark grey and light grey plastic. The dark grey makes up most of the figure with light grey used for smaller parts like the thighs and shoulder connection points. Paint colors include purple, gold, silver and red - all colors inspired by her Transformers Prime incarnation. I really have to give credit where it's due, the designers did a great job. With "cheaper" figures like this you wouldn't expect a lot of deco points, but there are plenty here. For instance, the purple paint is used on the chest, biceps, fists and feet, which breaks up the potential monotony of lots of dark grey. Her face also has intricate detailing with the face painted silver and the eyes painted red. I really like the deco on this figure.
Aside from the articulation mentioned above, Airachnid features ten 5mm ports to attach additional weapons. This is one of the main features of the "Armor Up" play pattern so all these ports make perfect sense. Of course, two of them are generally taken up by the beast mode leg pieces but it's cool you can disconnect them to attach in different places.
Transformation to Beast Mode
- Detach the handheld accessory and set it aside for now.
- Straighten out the arms and legs.
- Push the lower legs together.
- Be sure the pedipalps are attached as they help with the transformation.
- Push the chest/pedipalp section up and the figure will largely "auto-transform".
- Push the arms in on the sides.
- The weapon can be attached to the top of the arachnid mode.

Beast Mode
Airachnid's beast mode is a mechanical spider. Interestingly, despite her name, Airachnid is more often shown having spider-like features in robot mode versus having a beast mode. The last time a version of the character had a beast mode it was an "off screen" version of the Transformers One Airachnid. I really like this mode. It looks evil with its sharp and nicely detailed legs, the pedipalps/gatling cannon in the front add extra offensive power to the creature and of course if you attach the hammer weapon on top she looks even more dangerous. I love all the mechanical details on the figure. Even the eyes are shaped to look more like camera lenses than biological eyes. Airachnid has a beautiful sculpt.
This mode mostly shows off the darker grey plastic with the purple and gold paint taking center stage on the spider head. I do wish some silver or gold had been used for mechanical details on the back piece but given how much paint there is in robot mode it's not a shock this mode features minimal paint applications.
This mode features six 5mm ports. One is in front so it will most likely be taken up by the pedipalps/gatling cannon. I'm not counting the ones on the sides since you need them for the spider legs. The three on the back are the ones that will be most useful. There really is no articulation in this mode to speak of.
Final Thoughts
Airachnid is a fun figure and a surprise in the line since she has not appeared on the cartoon (yet?). I appreciate the homage to a past character and the figure is fun to boot. Of course, being a Cyberworld figure her articulation is relatively limited but to me this is still recommended.
Pros
- Cool homage to past Airachnid designs.
- Nice deco for a figure of this size/class.
- Fun and simple "auto-transform".
- Fun and unusual "Pincer Hammer" weapon.
Cons
- Elbow articulation would have been cool.
