Background:
Seaspray was one of my favorite characters from the G1 cartoon series. His distinctive robot and vehicle modes were always fun to see in action and his gargling voice always brought a smile to my face. While most fans think of Seaspray fondly, he has had surprisingly few toys over the years. There was of course the original G1 figure, then the redeco for G2. Years later we would get the "Hunt for the Decepticons" Voyager Class figure and finally the Titans Return Legends class figure. Now we finally have a Deluxe version of the character. The Retro G1 line is a surprising place for this character to be brought into the Deluxe Class because this is a brand new sculpt! Previous Retro G1 figures were redecos and/or retools of previous figures. For those wondering if this means this will be the only way to ever get Seaspray, Hasbro told me at New York Comic-Con 2025 that there is a plan to eventually release a version of this figure outside of being a Wal-Mart exclusive.

Packaging:
The packaging design for the "Retro G1" figures is nothing short of a wonderful love letter to G1. Instead of being boxed, Seaspray is inside a bubble glued to a card. This was once the standard for Transformers toys of a certain size but nowadays it is a rarity. The card back features all G1 styling including the classic G1 logo, the grid background with color gradient and the original G1 artwork for Seaspray in robot mode. Overlapping the artwork is a photo of him in vehicle mode with a thick, grey outline around him, a homage to how some G1 Mini-Bots were shown on their packaging. The lower left hand corner features the Hasbro logo used in the 80's and a cardboard insert in front of Seaspray has the word "Autobot" in white against a black background and the name "Seaspray" in black against a yellow background. This is another nod to the original G1 packaging.

Seaspray is packaged inside a bubble off to the right side of the card (if you are facing it) and he is in robot mode. Some fans had hoped he would be in vehicle mode like many G1 Mini-Bots were but in fact, G1 Mini-Bots were packaged in both modes so this works (and space-wise it makes more sense so it doesn't block the artwork).

The back of the card features the iconic G1 1985 battle scene with Grimlock biting Kickback while Shockwave flies overhead and Jetfire is blasting away at an Insecticon. Overlaid towards the bottom of the art is the blurb "It is a world of constant change, where things are not as they seem. it is the world of The Transformers...a world of Heroic Autobots and Evil Decepticons!". This text is featured in five languages. Note the words "constant change" have replaced "transformed" due to legal reasons (that warrant a whole discussion by themselves). Towards the bottom of the card is an "Authentic Transformers" logo next to the retro Hasbro logo. The bottom half of the card features another blast from the past: tech specs! Seaspray has a truncated version of his original tech specs in five languages. He also has a shortened version of his stats focusing on Strength, Intelligence, Speed and Firepower (though icons are used in place of the words to avoid having to translate those as well).

This packaging is absolutely gorgeous and I am so happy Hasbro has continued to use it for this new batch of Retro G1 figures!

Accessories:
Seaspray includes a blaster. The weapon is relatively small with an angled section in the back, a rectangular middle section and a cone shaped barrel. A rectangular piece is set vertically towards the middle likely representing an ammunition magazine. There is a 5mm peg at the bottom and the front can fit a Blast Effect. The right side of the weapon has a port that allows you to attach it to a small peg on Seaspray for weapon storage. The weapon is made of white plastic and is mostly painted silver except for the handle.

Robot Mode:
Seaspray has one of the more unusual robot modes. The front of the vehicle mode forms his feet, which wind up looking like giant shoes on his feet. This central body is very blocky and above that are two vertical panels connected by a bar that goes over the head (Peripheral vision? What's that?). The top of the vertical panels each have turbines on them with the propellers on the back. It is no surprise that his original tech specs mention he is not particularly agile on land! That said, it is a fun, unique look and it's another reason Sespray is special and unique. This figure embraces this classic design and does not try to alter it too much. Granted, the proportions are more "realistic" than his animated counterpart since this figure has to actually transform (without animation cheating) but he looks great and true to the G1 design!

One important note: this version of Seaspray is meant to be a Retro G1 update of the original action figure. Aside from the deco, this also means his head sculpt is heavily based on the one used for the original G1 figure. It has a flat top, visor eyes and a mouthplate with several horizontal lines on it. This is different from the animation model which has a more curved helmet, two distinct eyes and a mouthplate without any horizontal lines on it. I would not be surprised if the intent is to eventually put an animation accurate head on this figure (along with a new deco) in the non-exclusive mass release line.

This figure is made up of yellow, white, black and blue plastic. For the most part the color layout follows the design of the original figure and cartoon model with a white torso and waist area, blue on the arms and feet and yellow everywhere else. The propellers are black plastic. Paint colors include red, blue, silver, black and yellow. The yellow is used to paint the head and black is used for details like his eyes, windows on the chest and feet. Since this is a toy-based callback there are two rectangular details on his torso that are both sculpted and painted in. This is where the blue, yellow, red and silver all come into play. These sections are direct references to stickers on the G1 Seaspray's torso and it looks great!

There are twenty points of articulation on this figure including four on each arm and five on each leg. Despite being "covered" by vertical and horizontal patterns the head can turn side to side. There are nine 5mm ports on this figure. Each arm has two, each foot has one on the bottom, there is one on the back and of course there are the fists. On the left side panel next to the head there is a tiny peg that allows you to attach the side of the blaster. This is likely for the vehicle mode, but in this form it looks almost like a shoulder cannon.

Transformation to Vehicle Mode:

  1. Detach the blaster and set it aside for now.
  2. Straighten out the arms and legs.
  3. On the left foot, swing out both panels behind the "ankle" area.
  4. On the right foot, swing out the one panel.
  5. Under each foot is another panel, swing that out and the smaller one connected to it.
  6. Point the robot feet down and connect the small blue panels with the tabs on them to the corresponding slots on the sides of the yellow part of the legs.
  7. Push the feet together.
  8. Rotate each forearm around.
  9. Swing the back panel open.
  10. Turn the head around.
  11. Swing up the section with the propellers back, then forward, connecting the tabs in the front to the white section at the top of the chest.
  12. Swing the on the sides of the torso out a bit.
  13. Swing the mid-section back, tucking it into the back.
  14. the legs actually tuck "up" a bit, with the knees bent.
  15. Rotate the arms at the shoulder hinge forward and then slot the fist into the back of the sides of the feet.
  16. Swing the back panel up and attach it to the tabs.
  17. Rotate the raised panel on top of the robot torso section around.
  18. The blaster can be attached to the peg on the left side towards the back.

Vehicle Mode:
Seaspray is a hovercraft in vehicle mode based on the design of the G1 toy. he features rounded edges on the sides that come together to a point in the front. The main body of the vehicle looks like one large passenger section with rectangular windows in the front and two windows on a section on the top (perhaps the Bridge?). The back has his propellers both connected to two vertical panels with a horizontal panel between them. Many of these details including the windows and the propellers are based on details from the G1 toy and they look awesome!

This mode features most of the blue plastic on the front and sides with the yellow, black and white plastic making up the middle and back. Towards the front is a red Autobot symbol on a silver background, a reference to the sticker seen on the package photos for Seaspray in G1 (the actual figure had a heat sensitive symbol). Black is u sed on the two windows in front and the smaller ones toward the back. The "sticker" inspired designs from the robot mode carry over here as well. Overall Seapsray looks great!

There are no wheels on the bottom of this vehicle so don't go trying to "roll" it along the ground. As mentioned above you can attach the blaster to the left side vertical panel under the propellers. There are four 5mm ports on the sides you can use to attach additional accessories.

Final Thoughts:
Seaspray is not a character who appears a lot in the Transformers toy line so it is always fun when we get a new version of him. I absolutely loved the Legends Class version from years ago and I love this new iteration of the character. Highly recommended!

Pros:

  • Excellent sculpt in both modes.
  • Great details that make it look a bit more complex than his cartoon model.
  • The propellers spin!
  • I'm glad the blaster actually attaches in vehicle mode.

Cons:

  • The transformation is a tad fiddly, but hardly a deal breaker.
