Background:
In 1985, Kenner toys released a new toy line: M.A.S.K. (Mobile Armored Strike Kommand). This line consisted of transformable vehicles that would switch from one vehicle to another. Each vehicle included a driver or pilot figure. The toys were boosted by an animated TV Show which ran two seasons. The toy line lasted a total of four years. The series had a spiritual successor called Vor-Tech and characters from the line would appear here and there in comic books (usually tied to Transformers) but for the most part the line never saw a resurgence, until now! In early 2025, The Loyal Subjects announced it would be bringing M.A.S.K. back. The vehicles would all be recreations of the originals, using the original toys as a foundation but making some changes here and there. The driver and pilot figures would be all new. You can see my video on the Toy Fair 2025 announcement below.
One of the first wave of new M.A.S.K. toys is the Condor with Brad Turner.
It is important to note that as a kid I never owned any M.A.S.K. toys (that I can recall, anyhow) so I have relied on the internet for a lot of information about M.A.S.K. One awesome resource is Maskforce, check it out!
Packaging:
In an effort to stay true to the retro nature of M.A.S.K., The Loyal Subjects have attempted to recreate the original Condor's box as best they can given modern day restrictions. Like the original packaging it is a small, rectangular box with a flap on top. The M.A.S.K. logo is on the top flap and on the front of the box. The name "Condor" is printed in big, bold letters on the flap and the box. The artwork is directly taken from the original packaging and the layout of the photos and artwork are basically the same as the original box. Even the colors are the same with a bold red background, white borders and lettering in various colors including yellow and black.
That said, no fans should worry about this box being substituted for a true retro box. The age recommendation on the box is now 8+ versus the "Ages 4 & Up" of the original. The picture of Brad Turner is a render of the toy's CG model with two helmets by his feet. Also, several text callouts are in multiple languages while the original U.S. release only had English. On the back, the photography of the box contents shows the Blast Effects included with this set, something that the original did not have. The designers did a great job with this box. It definitely has a retro appearance which I think any child of the 80's will appreciate.
Inside the vehicle is packaged in a black plastic tray with every item laid out so you can see it all as soon as you slide it out. The tray has a clear plastic piece that goes over it to keep everything in place. Instructions are included in a plastic bag.
The character included with the Condor is Brad Turner, a member of M.A.S.K. This is not a reissue of the original figure. Instead, the basic design of the original was used as inspiration for an all new figure. This figure's proportions are a bit more sleek and thin than the slightly bulkier original. That said, it shares a lot of the same details including his distinct suit with a raised square on the chest and two lines underneath it. He also has sunglasses sculpted onto his face (which wind up being much smaller than the original's) and a strap that goes across his waist down to his right leg.
This figure is made of yellow plastic. Red is used to paint parts such as his gloves while black is used on his sunglasses, belt and boots. His head has a flesh tone on the face with brown on the hair.
Brad Turner includes two helmets (his "Hocus Pocus" masks which created illusions). Each is inspired by one of the variants from the original 80's toys. In that series he had a "short" helmet which only comes a bit over his chest while the larger mask goes over more of his chest and back. The larger helmet features a Blast Effect coming out of the eyes in purple, representing him projecting an illusion. The helmets are also made out of yellow plastic with black paint details. I think the inclusion of the extra mask with its "Hocus Pocus" effect was a great idea! This figure features seven points of articulation including a ball jointed head and knees that bend. The bottom of the feet feature holes to use on attachment points wherever available.
Covert Assault Cycle Mode:
The Condor's "Assault Cycle Mode" looks like it was inspired by a Kawasaki Ninja that was then made into a more scifi type vehicle. It has an angled front end and a back section that curves towards the back. The middle is a (relatively) large seat. There are plenty of sculpted details along the sides and back to give his vehicle more of a scifi look, as if to represent the complex machinery underneath. The Loyal Subjects took great pains to ensure the colors of the plastic would match the originals but I'll leave it to more hardcore M.A.S.K. fans to put this one side by side with an original.
This vehicle is made of neon green and black plastic. Green makes up most of the motorcycle's main body with black used for smaller parts like the seat and the wheels. The windshield is a translucent, smokey grey plastic. Paint details are mostly black, using the same pattern as the original including an "L" shaped detail on the sides of the front end and smaller details on the back. A sticker showing a control panel is applied to the dashboard behind the windshield. Like the original vehicle, the sides of the wheels have some vacuum metallized silver, which looks great! All that said, there are a couple differences between the original Condor and this release. Both side view mirrors have been painted with silver to represent the mirrors. Meanwhile a circle detail on either side has also been painted silver whereas they were unpainted on the original. I am glad to see that if the designers had to change something, it was giving this vehicle more detail, not less!
Brad Turner can sit in the seat, but not with his legs on either side as you may expect but instead his feet wind up under the control panel. You have to fidget with them a little to get him to actually sit properly in the seat but it can be done. The motorcycle rolls on both wheels. Thanks to its width, the motorcycle can stand upright on its own without flopping to one side. That said, if you want to add a bit of dramatic effect, the motorcycle includes a large "smoke" blast effect in translucent grey that can be attached to the rear wheel to act as a base. I think this was a brilliant way to add some value to the set while giving the vehicle a fun display option!
Transformation to Attack Copter:
One of the selling points of the M.A.S.K. toy line were transformations that featured automation in some way. The Condor is no exception. Push the black bars that wrap around the rear section up and snap it into place. This will extend the lower portion of the helicopter mode. Swing the rear wheel back to act as a rear rotor and finally swing the helicopter blades up to the sides. Brad Turner can still sit in the vehicle in this mode.
Attack Copter:
The Attack Copter mode is really fun. I love the idea of the rear wheel becoming the rear rotor blade and the skis and weaponry that slide out from the bottom are a fantastic touch. Another cool detail is in the front where the opening where the headlight would be reveals a weapon inside! This small weapon slides forward as the helicopter blades swing up. When you push the blades back down the weapon slides back in.
The Condor set includes a small, translucent yellow Blast Effect that can attach to the weapon in front. You can also spin the rotors and they won't go smacking into any part of the vehicle (or Brad Turner if he's seated in the vehicle).
This mode reveals another cool detail: the M.A.S.K. name on either side in yellow and black. This is another detail taken directly from the original Condor.
I do have one reservation about this vehicle. The rotor blades on the rotor section are not hinged. It relies on thin plastic bending up and down. This does worry me in terms of long term use and potential breakage. To be fair I doubt many collectors purchasing this set will be transforming this toy every day, but it is still a concern.
Final Thoughts:
The Condor is a cool recreation of the original 80's toy. The packaging is wonderfully retro and I am very happy The Loyal Subjects used the original Condor toy as reference for this one. Having a new version of the human figures was a really nice touch as well. Aside from some reservations about the helicopter rotor blade, I really like this set! Now, the cost is going to inevitably drive some folks off, and I get it. That said, for hardcore collectors who want a pristine version of this set I do recommend it.
Pros:
- Excellent reproduction of the Condor.
- All new Brad Turner figure.
- Both the "small" and "large" helmets are included.
- Blast Effects are a wonderful addition to the set.
- Excellent reproduction of the 80's M.A.S.K. packaging.
Cons:
- The rotor blades not being on hinges does worry me.
- Getting Brad into the seat can be a bit fiddly.
