Background:
Back in 2020, Hasbro released a new Sunstreaker action figure as part of the Earthrise line. This base sculpt would go on to be used for the Cordon and Spinout 2-Pack and later a redeco as a more "cartoon" based Sunstreaker in the Autobots Stand United 5-Pack. That Sunstreaker has now been released individually as part of the Studio Series 86 line in 2026. Since I never reviewed the 5-Pack, I will focus on the changes made to the Sunstreaker figure for this release.

Packaging:
Sunstreaker is packaged in a standard Studio Series box. The box is rectangular with a large window in front. The background is mostly black with artwork of the character in both modes overlaid on the right. To the left are the now standard icons indicating he transforms from a robot to a car. A 15 step transformation is called out along with an age recommendation of 8+. The "Transformers" logo is now set horizontally below the figure after many (many) years of being vertical on the right side.
The back of the box features a screenshot of Sunstreaker on the Autobot ship with the Dinobots in the background. To the right it says "SUNSTREAKER is a skilled front-line warrior for the AUTOBOTS.". Under that is the figure in both modes calling out the 15 step transformation. The background is a greyed out image of Autobot City. Below that is legal information in multiple languages.

Robot Mode:
Like many recent Generations releases, this figure is intended to be a "modernized" version of the character that takes design cues from the original G1 representations of the character. These include:
- Head: The head sculpt features Sunstreaker's distinct round helmet with "ear flaps" coming up to a point on the sides.
- Torso: Sunstreaker's torso is formed from the top section of the vehicle mode including a trapezoid shaped indentation on top.
- Shoulder: Each shoulder has a rectangular section on top with beveled details on the sides. These are based on accessories that attached to G1 Sunstreaker's shoulders.
- Forearms: The forearms are rectangular and blocky with a series of lines wrapping around near the elbows.
- Lower legs: The front panels on the lower legs feature some mechanical greebles, similar to G1 Sunstreaker.
- Feet: The front of the vehicle mode splits to form the feet, so each has a curved shape with headlights on the sides.
- Weapon: Sunstreaker's blaster can attach to his back to store away. A bit of it extends upward behind the head, looking like G1 Sunstreaker's head which was attached to a similar looking piece.
While the Earthrise version of this figure did seem to nod to the animated series, this version definitely does! The lighter yellow plastic from the previous version is now a deep, rich yellow color that I like a lot more than the original. The black plastic has been replaced with a charcoal colored plastic. There is no translucent plastic this time around. Paint colors include a charcoal that matches the plastic, light blue, silver, yellow, blue, grey and red. The deco layout is not exactly the same as the first release. For instance, this time his upper arms have charcoal colored paint on them whereas on the original the same section was left unpainted. Also this time out the entire back section is painted instead of just a small section at the base. The light blue paint is used on the windows, covering up the sculpted details underneath. Like the previous version there is a red Autobot symbol on his chest, but it does not look quite as "sharp" as the original (but it still looks good). Overall I much prefer this deco over the original. There are less issues with yellow paint having to match the yellow plastic and everything looks bolder.

There are twenty points of articulation on Sunstreaker. This includes four points in each arm and five in each leg. Sunstreaker has eleven 5mm ports that you can use to attach accessories. Each arm has three (shoulder, forearm and fist) and each leg has two (back of the leg and bottom of the foot). He also has one on the back (mentioned above). His "rocket pack"/blaster weapon has a 5mm peg allowing you to attach it to his hand or any other of these points. I do wish he had a weapon like his "missile hand" from G1 and/or the shoulder rockets seen on the G1 figure and animation model. There are three attachment points for Blast Effects on Sunstreaker. There is one on each forearm and one on the right leg. These help simulate him being "hit" by "weapons fire".
When Sunstreaker was released as part of the 5-Pack, he included a blaster (based on one of the weapons included with Legacy Elita-1. Unfortunately, for this release they did not include that weapon which is really a shame. I still think the figure needed more weapons and a spoiler for the vehicle mode.
Transformation to Vehicle Mode:
- Detach the weapon and set it aside for now.
- Straighten out the arms and legs.
- Point the feet downward, pushing it up against the edges of the windshield on the back of the legs.
- Swing the chest panel down.
- Swing the robot head into the chest cavity.
- Rotate the arms so they are raised up.
- Rotate the torso piece around (it is connected to a large swivel joint).
- Swing the arms down and in.
- Swing each robot fist into the forearms.
- Rotate the forearms around, then swing the forearms together.
- Swing each lower leg up and over the thighs, then push them together.
- Swing the torso piece forward to complete the top of the vehicle.
- Attach the blaster to the middle 5mm port on the back.

Vehicle Mode:
In G1 Sunstreaker transformed into a Lamborghini Countach, a sleek and futuristic looking sports car. Specifically Sunstreaker transformed into the LP5000 variant of the vehicle, but this car looks much more like the LP400. The most distinctive feature of this variant is the very thin front end. The designs on the windows and the rear of the vehicle also echo some of the designs on the rear of the L400. The blaster accessory sits on top of the vehicle, calling back to the panel where G1 Sunstreaker's head was hidden in vehicle mode. It is pretty impressive how close this design skirts the edge of looking like the real life vehicle, but it is just at the edge of needing a trademark and it looks great.
Unfortunately, there is one design choice made that I'm not crazy about, though I understand it. The 5mm ports on the forearms wind up at the back of the vehicle where you would expect there to be accessories that would form a spoiler in the back of the vehicle. However there is no spoiler so there winds up just being two holes in the back of the vehicle, which looks odd. The thing is, the L400 did not have a spoiler in the back, so this totally makes sense in that respect, but personally I would have liked something to fill in that area.
This mode consolidates a lot of the yellow parts so the bold yellow really stands out. The light blue paint offers a really nice contrast to the yellow. Then throw in silver and charcoal paint details and Sunstreaker looks great in this mode.
Final Thoughts:
If you already own previous versions of this figure, then it's going to be a hard sell for me to recommend spending almost $30 USD on the sculpt yet again. That said, I really like this redeco. The new colors are beautiful and stand out much more than the first version. I have friends who sometimes sell their previous versions of figures to subsidize new versions and that I can get behind. If you don't have this Sunstreaker however, it's totally recommended!
Pros:
- Excellent sculpt in both modes.
- Beautiful new deco, especially the very deep yellow color.
- Good play value.
Cons:
- Given this is a straight up redeco (which saves money in development) I wish this figure had come with new accessories.
