Beast Mode:
The wolf is one of those modes that has only been done a handful of times in the history of the Transformers line. This iteration of that mode differs from the other Animatros beasts so far in that he is detailed much like a techno-organic beast, similar to those from the Beast Wars era. A majority of the details on this toy are mechanical in nature. The head has cut lines that seem like armor plating integrating with other plates. The neck has a rectangular shape with vents and circular tech details on it. Each leg has circles indicating mechanical joints along with segemented tubes and wires.

On the other hand, there are a lot of fur patterns on this toy. On the underside of the neck, the top of the head and even integrated into the legs there are plenty of fur patterns integrated with wires and tubes.

The primary colors used here are pearl white, light blue and dark blue. Yellow paint is used for details. On the rear, left leg is a tampographed Autobot symbol. The end of his tail (a missile) and the fangs inside his mouth are translucent yellow plastic.

Fang Wolf has twenty points of articulation in this form. Most of these are in the legs. If you attach the Force Chip into the slot on his neck, Fang Wolf's mouth opens revealing huge fangs inside (hence the name). At the same time, the fur patterns on the side of his head moves upward. On the rear, right leg there is a slot to store the Force Chip in this form.

Fang Wolf has a great beast mode. It is highly detailed, well articulated and has a nice, clean deco.

Transformation to Beast Mode:

  1. Detach the tail and set aside the Force Chip.
  2. Straighten out the rear legs and point them back.
  3. Flip out the heel pieces on the rear beast mode legs.
  4. Rotate the lower, rear legs around.
  5. Swing down the "fur" piece under the neck.
  6. Swing each half of the main body out to the ses.
  7. Swing the central body section up.
  8. Flip the robot head up and have it face forward.
  9. Swing the two body halves together. They connect by the peg inserting into the hole on the other side.
  10. Slide the right arm up and straighten it out.
  11. Slide the left arm down and flip out the robot fist.
  12. Place the missile launcher in his hand. The Force Chip can be put into the slot on the left leg.

Robot Mode:
Fang Wolf's robot mode is reminscent of Beast Wars robot modes. Like Silverbolt, his robot mode head has a very canine appearance which includes a beast like snout. The upper part of the helmet looks a bit Prime/Convoy-like, especially with the crest in the center. On the lower part of the helmet are fur details angling back. Like Jawbreaker, his right arm is his beast mode head and neck.

The rest of the robot mode is rather complex in detail, especially with the central body, which has lots of layers of detail including tubes in the center and cut lines in the "V" shaped detail in the center. Making it red in color only makes me think of KITT's sensor from Knight Rider, but that's the scifi fan in me talking.

There are no color surprises in this form, with yellow and dark blue being quite prominant on the upper body and waist piece.

Fang Wolf has twenty one points of articulation in this form. This includes six points of articulation in each leg and
head articulation. The weapon is also on a hinge, which allows it to serve a dual purpose. Have it hel up with the grey/light blue end facing forward and it acts as a sword. Swing the barrel down and point it forward and it's a missile launcher, very nice. Press the button on the inner side of the launcher
to fire the missile.

Final Thoughts:
Fang Wolf is a very cool toy. I have some reservations about any Transformer who has a beast head as an arm, but in this case it works well enough. The lack of waist articulation is a bit of a drag, but not enough to significantly affect the toy. Recommended.
