TV Shows: G1 Transformers appear on "The Goldbergs" in last night's episode
"The Goldbergs" is an American sitcom that started in 2013. Set in the 80's, this show follows Adam and his life partly told through reenactments of videos series producer and creator Adam F. Goldberg recorded during his childhood. Naturally, for any kid in the 80's toys would come into play. Among the various toys shown on this program are Transformers! "The Goldbergs" has shown Transformers figures before, even working them into a storyline in one episode. Now the Robots in Disguise have appeared again!
The November 7, 2018 episode "Bohemian Rap Battle" opens with Adam walking through a recreation of the action figure aisle in Toys R Us. Lining the shelves are a mixture of authentic vintage figures and packaging reproductions. This includes a vintage G1 Megatron, a Devastator (possibly the reissue), Trypticon, Sixshot, Kickback and reproductions of packaging for Swoop, Tracks, Bombshell, Twin Twist and Blaster. In a clever move, the "action figures" inside the boxes for Swoop, Bombshell and Tracks appear to be photos of those toys on their cardboard/bubble inserts printed in color and inserted into the boxes. At least one box (Perceptor) looks like a genuine box that is empty.
Most notably at one point Adam holds a Megatron that appears to be a genuine vintage figure. There is a bit of box damage on one side and an old price tag (that is very clearly not a Toys R Us 80's price tag).
The mixture of figures is a bit apocryphal. The episode also shows the Berlin wall coming down, placing it in 1989. However, the figures on the shelves range from 1985-87 releases. At that time Pretenders would have more likely dominated the shelves. That said, nothing quite hits the nostalgia button like the old grid background with red and purple packaging so the use of that style is totally understandable.
